It has been a while since I created Discord for everyone here (nearly 8 months
to be specific 😱) and the community despite being a small one has been pretty tight-knit 🥺 I'm super blessed to meet amazing people through Handxmade, and the Discord community that somehow just worked out
was probably because of that ✨
Most recently, Discord has been allowing livestreams and I've also been using it! It's like having exclusive livestreams
so even more reason to join the Discord imo!! 😀
So in an effort to have more people join us over there in Discord, I thought I'll make sort of like a "guide" for those of you who has NEVER used Discord before
! It does have a little bit of learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it'd become 2nd nature! You'll be able to join other Discord servers community other than mine as well hurhurhurr.
If this guide helps you to understand how to use Discord as a beginner and you would like to show your appreciation, you can always buy me a ko-fi
, or become a patron
and join the fam if you enjoy miniature edutainment videos and other random things! 😀💖
Before we get into it, be sure to download Discord app
on your phone (available for both iPhone and Android) or even your Desktop! (It's freeeee ✨) Discord is used by a lot of gamers so the desktop version is pretty great, but I use it the most on my phone hurhur. This "guide" will be catered for use on phones
I'll be sectioning this post so that it will guide you step by step as long as you follow it, however, if you just need certain help, here's a peep of the contents!
Most of the time, it is done through a link!
For Handxmadefam discord server, you will be sent the link through the welcome message when you first pledged to become a patron.
Or if you're lazy to sift through your email, you can find the link on the pinned welcome message
I've set up in the posts section for us 😀
If you don't have a Discord account yet, you can Register
for one directly through the link as well!
Once that's done, click on Open Handxmade Fam
and you'll be in the server with a welcome message! ✨DISCORD COMPONENTS BREAKDOWN
"There's so many things!!! WHAT DO I DO NOW MY GOD" I hear you, I really do. I was a little bit
overwhelmed myself when I first went into a new discord group.
When you scroll all the way up to the welcome message, there's this three lines, click on it, and it will bring you to the Server and the channels that it has!
This should be what comes up, on the right is a breakdown of what they are!
The blue area
is where all your Discord Servers
will be at, this is where you jump from one server to another. Our server is my handxmade graphic logo! 🥰
If you haven't been to the server for a while, and you get bombarded by tons of notifications dots, you can hold the server icon (or right-click on desktop version) and Mark As Read
to keep the server clean! NOTE:
I used to be able to do it on my iPhone but somehow unable to do it now, had to use my bf's android phone to record this haha. Hopefully, it will be updated for iPhone again soon!
The hot pink area
is where you'll see the Server name
, and also server settings
etc. You go here to change settings like notifications etc.
I put my notifications to "All Messages
" as being the owner of the discord group I kinda need to keep myself updated 🤣 But usually people would go for "Only @mentions
"! This is recommended so you get notified for things down the road (more about it below) 💕
The orange and yellow areas
are where the Channels
are at which will be where we will have conversations!
You can click on the channel name at the top to read the description of each channel if you're not sure what it's for 😀
The Channel Categories
will be sort of like a "folder" where similar channels will be grouped together. It is beneficial so you can minimise them to make it look "cleaner" (if that's your preference) like this:
When you do that, the channels that have new notifications will be un-minimised and show up
! It will hide again once you get out of the channel and read all notifications 😀
We have a lot of channels now but trust me - they are not as overwhelming as you think! We've been Netflix Party-ing every Wednesday, even play games together etc, and Animal Crossing even has its own channel category 😆 It's been really fun 😍
Now right at the bottom of the app, you'll see these 5 things. They are pretty self-explanatory, but basically, this row of icons are more towards the "personal" side of things.
You can, for example, change the app to "Light Mode" via Personal profile > Appearance
I personally LOVE light mode, and I know some prefer dark mode (which is the default), so you do what you prefer and check that out! (I'll be sharing the rest of the gifs in light mode hahaha 🤭)SO WHAT DO I DO IN YOUR SERVER?
1. The first thing, of course, is to read the welcome message in #welcome-and-read-me
channel! There are some channel links there, and also useful links to check your points and also Reward Vault etc.
2. Next you can go to #intro-pls
and introduce yourself! You don't HAVE to do it if you don't want to, but it would be nice so I can know who you are
(especially if you use a nickname that I don't know about!)
It can really be about ANYTHING! Feel free to talk about your hobbies, your Instagram account (very open to self-promo in here haha
). Don't feel shy!! 😘
3. Once that done, highly recommend you to go to #role-assign
so you can assign some roles for yourself!
Basically, you just scroll through them and press on the emoji to trigger the role assignation!
Once you've done that, you can click on your own profile within the server (or anyone else's for that matter), and you'll see these new "labels" that you've added in yourself! These are call Roles
What these roles do is when it is tagged, you'll be able to get notified
when anyone tags it! This is how my "Recent Mentions" looks like - as you can see, it's not just my username that's being tagged, but also roles that I've assigned myself to 🥰 HOW DO I JOIN YOUR LIVESTREAMS?
First, if you're not gonna be really active in my server (totally fine btw) and just want to join in the livestream when it's available, you'll want to actually be NOTIFIED when the livestream is on
Go to #role-assign
and look for this:*ping is discord term for notify
React on the emojis that apply to what you want to be notified for, and you'll receive a notification when I tag the role! ✨
Here's how it works when it actually happens (thank you @renaesense
First, you'll receive a notification. Click on it, it will bring you to #livestream-chat
Head to where the channels are at, scroll down to VOICE CHANNELS
and you should see me on #xm-livestream
. Click in and then on Watch Stream
and you'll see my livestream! 🎉Yesss it's that easy hehehehe.
You can also head to #livestream-chat
channel (swipe down from anywhere) and write something if you want to talk about something related to the livestream that's currently streaming! As you can see, the livestream will become a picture-in-picture (PIP) so you still can watch while typing hehe. Just click on the PIP to go back to fullscreen ✨ NOTE
: Seems like PIP is only available for Apple devices? But fret not, the livestream will still be on (like a phone call) even if you get out of it for awhile!
You can also unmute yourself and speak, if it's kinda a chill livestream, we can even chat there hurhurhur 💫 BASIC DISCORD USAGEHow do I tag someone?
Similar to Social Medias like Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, you type "@" in front of their username, and click on their name when it pops up! Once you tagged successfully, you should see their name highlighted differently (in blue) compared to the other text. How do I use emojis/use emojis to react to a post?
To use an emoji, other than your emoji keyboard, you can also press on this smiley face in the text box in Discord!
We have some cute emojis that we added ourselves in our server (a lot of them thanks to our own members hehe) and we may add more in the future as well!! I really love the emojis hehe but the best part about it is that you can also react to a text
with them to show your reaction!!! 😍
Long press on the message to see various things you can do to the text, and click on an emoticon that shows up at the top row! ✨(Look at the middle text in the gif!)
If you want to use another emoticon, click on the emoji icon on the far right of the same row to pick and choose one that you want to use! (Yes, you can react more than one emoticon! 😀)
You can also click on the same emoticon that has already been added to show that you feel the same sentiment hehe I really love how this works 😍 How do I reply to someone's text?
To reply to someone, long press on the text and click on "Quote
This will automatically quote the message you want to reply to, and also helps you tag them so they will get notified that someone responded to them!
Tip is to "Quote" before you type anything
so your response will be at the back of the quote, otherwise, the message will look a little bit weird (albeit still readable la haha)!
That's all~! 💕
I hope this little guide/tutorial will be helpful for you if you're keen to join ANY discord server, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the server itself (everyone's real nice and we're all learning together anyway ✌🏻) or comment in this post! I may update the Basic Discord usage part if there is anything I missed that are common questions as well 🥰
